I Have Been Banned From A Church

Due to my association with Emergent found on google, I have been banned from a church. They scheduled me to lead a few seminars months ago for an event next weekend, but that has been cancelled. The associate pastor called me yesterday to inform me of the change.

Please pray that I come to understand why.

Caroline, that seems so strange! What could they find so troubling about Emergent? Did the associate pastor explain?

Oh Caroline, I'm so very sorry. I agree with Songbird in that I'm puzzled by what they could find troubling about Emergent. My guess is that they don't know much about Emergent at all, but it sounds new and therefore strikes a chord of fear for them.

I pray that the church learns to operate out of a place of love instead of a place of fear. And I pray for you -- for peace and a strong sense of God's warm embrace.

Oh if the church would ONLY emerge!. . But YOU are, and WE are, and so then is the church.

ignorance births fear births ignorance.. . .

I am so sorry you have to walk through this. . It is no doubt THEIR LOSS. . . so sad.

The darkness rarely likes light.

Be encouraged sister. . .

I don't know what Emergent is, never heard of it. I will look into it, though. I feel terrible for you. What a hurt.

And what sort of a church is it that banned you?

You are in my prayers.

So sorry. I've encountered the fear of the Emergent movement and I confess I'm not surprised but I'm angry and hurt on your behalf. I will be praying.

How wretched....that must feel very uncomfortable....and how could ANYONE object to Emergent? New ways of being Church are surely part of where the Spirit is leading us??
Do hope you arent feeling too horribly bruised by all this.
Love and prayers

My heart grieves for the body of Christ.

I was excluded from a blog because I'd mentioned emergent - it was the first time I'd come across the fear /phobia

Irony is that emergent church = a church that is waking up, becoming relevent (and seen to be relevent) but still with the love of e.g. Eucharist and other tradtional practices is - IMHO - only good.

Probably why they aren't keen to let me become a pastor now either :( And the CB here haven't like it that I blog either. sigh. As I say I grieve for the body of Christ. I really do

But sister I grieve for you too. It's no good saying that it's their loss (which is it ) because the way they have done this (cancelling an event only a few days in advance - and by phone!) is unacceptable.

I'm also always concerned by the fact that your association with Emergent was googled - and yet you were not even asked about it! Not that I think it's grounds for cancelling anything.

(On second reading of your blog post, I think I realized that this is not your home church that banned you, but a church where you were scheduled to do some seminars? Is that so?)

I dug up this article that talks about what some of the "controversy" around Emergent is. Not surprisingly it seems to focus on issues of Truth (with a capital "T"). Perhaps the most salient quote from the article comes when Professor Don Carson of Trinty Evangelical Divinity School frets that emergent's post-modern sensibility "becomes really a threat to historic Christianity."

The article is a year old now, but may shed some light on what kind of fears may be motivating this church.

Here's the link: New Way of 'Doing Church' Emerges, With Some Controversy.

I'm sorry to read about this. But keep in mind your online community and its support.

Oh my. I do think reading the article JWD posted may help you. I have some concerns about some aspects of the emergent church. It means different things to different people, of course. Nonetheless, I think that in many ways my little church is becoming more and more an emergent congregation. What I find inexplicable is not their fear. (Sad, but not inexplicable.) What I find totally inexcusable is that they cancelled on such short notice, gave you no good reason, and bam..that was it. I grieve for the hurt this causes, but I don't think its about you. I think it is more about them. Come to Wisconsin anytime and we will welcome you with open arms.

I will be praying.

wow. now i see why God lead me to this little RGBP. thank you for "circling the wagons".

you are right; this is not my home church. emergent has received much positive and negative feedback. my emergent cohort here in atlanta has blessed and supported me beyond measure as a woman stepping out in ministry. also, i have limitless support nationally in the conversation.

I know it feels shitty now - and smarts a bit too I bet - but this is the ultimate compliment that you are doing great things for the Lord.

You are doing great things, studiously and prayerfully attempting to make yourself the best Christian and leader you can be in this earthly kingdom. Consider this a badge to place on your Bad-Ass Christian vest.

As the Apostle Paul said... and I have to go find the reference:
"f--k em'"

Wow. Know that you are not alone. I know of several people here in Chicago who have been banned from churches for the same reason(s). The Emergent movement is multifaceted as you know. And as such it is met with as many reactions as imaginable...and then some.

Peace and all good things. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Caroline wow

Emergent is still new here but will have similar response I'm sure.

Stay true to who you are and the calling God has given you and the rest can just go jump.

Prayers with you

Oh, geez... I'm sorry, Caroline.

Imagine the good we Christians could do (and be) in the world if we weren't so quick to beat up on each other...

Prayers ascending, sister.

Ok…that’s just funny as Crap. And yes Crap is funny. People say it…and then if they think it through their response is…No…No…No…not funny as “Crap” because that isn’t necessarily funny…What I Meant is it was Hilarious.

Anyway this isn’t a treatise on the word “Crap” or other derivative slang terms. It’s about you and your association with “Emergent”. I’m here to warn you, you had better distance yourself from this radical movement or you’ll be the next Corrie Tinboom writing from your own hiding place. Do you realize what’s happening here! Wake up and smell the bubble gum! These are radical people you are dealing with! No doubt you’ve already gone too far and gotten on their mailing list?! Move now and don’t give a forwarding address!

Think about it Caroline…This group wants to be “relevant”. How can they do that and adhere to the tenants of “normal” “American” Christians! We have a corner on the truth and everyone else is damned! Especially those that just “Go to Church” every Sunday. I mean…these guys want these “Go to Church” folks to start thinking! This emergent group wants everyone to see that being alive in Christ isn’t just for the “dress up time” on Sunday. How dare they!

I’m proud that this Pastor had the guts to call you out and standing on the ground that “this is My church and anyone associated with anything that would cause questions will NOT be allowed in”! CIRCLE THE WAGONS BROTHER…CIRCLE THE WAGONS! This stuff is getting out of hand. Next thing you know he’ll have “his” people actually asking QUESTIONS! The Horror is just too much to think about.

And to think YOU’VE ALREADY BEEN THERE and taught a weekend for women! Aaarrrrooouuuugggghhhhh! Is Armageddon not far off!
